Berkmar grad Wesley Witherspoon reached an agreement on a professional basketball contract Wednesday with the Shimane Susanoo Magic of the Basketball Japan League.
The 6-foot-9 forward, who played college basketball at Memphis, played briefly this season for the Helsinki Seagulls in Finland, but had his most success last year for Air21 Express in the Phillipines. He averaged 24.6 points and 8.8 rebounds for the Express.
Witherspoon, 24, joined the San Antonio Spurs after college but spent most of his playing time in 2012 and 2013 with a pair of NBA D-League teams, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers and the Erie Bayhawks. He also played for Nantes (France) in 2013.
Berkmar also has another player in the Basketball Japan League — Wayne Arnold. Arnold is a starter for the Iwate Big Bulls and averages 15.8 points. Dacula grad B.J. Puckett is in the same league, averaging 14.6 points and 6.7 rebounds for Takamatsu Five Arrows.
Former Berkmar and Georgia Tech star Tony Akins also plays professionally in Asia. He averages 13 points for Sonic Boom KT in South Korea.
