LAWRENCEVILLE — It was a tight first quarter, but Berkmar took over in the second quarter, outscoring Parkview 24-11, en route to an 84-59 win in the Region 8-AAAAAA quarterfinals Tuesday at Central Gwinnett.
The win clinches a state playoff berth for the Patriots and moves them into the region quarterfinals where they will play the winner of today’s Dacula-Central winner.
The Patriots and Panthers went back-and-forth throughout the first quarter with Berkmar outscoring Parkview 26-21 in the opening frame. Jack Lapenta had seven early points to pace Parkview, while Berkmar countered with Al Durham and Jay Estime early, with the duo putting the Patriots up early.
“We needed to get stops after that first quarter,” said Berkmar head coach Greg Phillips.
The second quarter saw the Patriots get more stops as a 3-pointer from Durham got the scoring going early. Midway through the second quarter the Patriots built up their lead to 35-24.
“The second quarter gave us some breathing room and we had a chance to build onto our lead,” Phillips said.
From there, the lead continued to build and the Patriots took a 50-32 lead into halftime.
The Panthers continued to fight in the second half, but Berkmar was just too much.
The Patriots got 19 points and five rebounds from Durham, while Zach Cooks had 16 points. Lane Foster contributed 14 points and 10 rebounds.
